Technology Station in Automotive Components

ACTS provides a first choice one-stop multi disciplinary advisory centre for the Automotive Component and related industries in Southern Africa. The focus of ACTS is to provide support to the SME's in the Automotive Component Manufacturing Industry in order to improve innovation and competitiveness with the aim of making the South African automotive industry more globally competitive. Major services rendered by ACTS:

  • Failure and fatigue life prediction analysis
  • Litigation support (failures)
  • Mechanical testing of metals, ceramics
  • Residual stress determination
  • Materials characterisation
  • Process monitoring (stress analysis)
  • Load monitoring (electric motors)
  • Manufacturing process development, evaluation and optimisation for discrete part manufacturing (moulding, forming (metal, autoglass), cutting, joining)
  • Mechatronic system development / robotic applications (grippers, remote monitoring)
  • Product Development and Design
The support offered by ACTS include product design and development:

  • Technology transfer
  • New technologies
  • Mechanical / Materials testing services
  • Project management
  • Process control and monitoring
  • System analysis and design
  • Rapid product development (3D printing)
ACTS can readily access the following well-established research activities at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Research and Design:

Prof. Dr. Danie Hattingh, Pr Tech Eng, is the Manager of ACTS – his areas of expertise are failure and fatigue. He is ably assisted by a personal assistant. There are three consultants (with Master Degrees) with specific expertise in product development and design working for ACTS
